Anti-Trans Policies Will Become a Road to Insidious Censorship and Indoctrination
Women's Rights will be gutted first. But changing how gender is treated in every aspect of public life will enforce other dangerous and oppressive hierarchies
Trump announced he will change the way gender is taught in schools, how it is treated by the government, and dictates how doctors can treat people when it comes to gender.
In this video, Kyle Kulinski shows clips from a video posted by Trump after the election, in which the incoming President announces draconian policies meant to wipe out trans healthcare, as well as education around gender that deviates from “traditional” gender roles. I will not send traffic to Trump’s original video, but you can watch that instead, if you want to get a sense of what is being proposed.
The problem is that strict, and exclusively male and female gender roles support oppressive power structures. They reinforce the role of men as despotic rulers over their families, a role that also extends into politics. We trans people are still rare enough — it should not be worth it, to them, to focus so much effort on erasing us. But enforcing strict gender roles will directly affect all women, reducing their claim to individuality and forcing them to adhere to what MAGA believes is feminine.
and can easily spill over into establishing hierarchies based on other identities. These "traditional" gender roles also support generally oppressive power structures. They reinforce the role of men as despotic rulers over their families, and justify their dominance writ large.
We trans people are being used to insert a Trojan Horse into the system, one meant to marginalize half of the country even further. It is also dangerous to teachers, not just because they have to avoid any mention of trans existence, but also must adhere to their patriarchal gender ideology. This means it will become absurdly hard to talk about feminist analysis, feminist theory, or anything that goes into sex and gender in ways MAGA doesn't like. Think about just how censorious this would be. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a massive exodus from the teaching profession, a field where we are already struggling to recruit in. For the teachers who stay, their teaching would now be so hamstrung, they will learn to teach sticking very closely to approved textbooks. Teachers who agree with the MAGA agenda will also be emboldened to spread their lies, and arguably raise a generation of children indoctrinated to be party loyalists.
I believe it is incumbent on us to make sure we speak about these things not just in terms of "identity politics" or supporting trans folk, but also in terms of how this is censorship and indoctrination and erase decades of Civil Rights gains. I don’t think it is a far stretch to move on to enforcing other hierarchies, especially considering the way MAGA is also focusing efforts on dehumanizing and eliminating immigrants. w
We must continue to protect ALL people, trans people included, not just because they are a vulnerable population that is currently being scapegoated, but because allowing MAGA to institute their policies that are on the surface meant to target us, means that they will push a radically hierarchical structure on all facets of public life.
Love this! Since Trump won we have to think about the impacts it will have on the trans community and education. He has actively stated he wants to defund the department of education and change what kids are taught and it's something that needs to be discussed in depth.
